Year 5 Term 1 – Vikings

In term 1 we studied the Vikings.  We dived straight into the story of Beowulf, a story thought to have possibly been originally set on Sheppey.  We wrote about heroes and the monsters they fought and turned this into drama, by writing properly formatted scripts, acting them out and recording them on Ipads. In addition to this we learned about and recreated Viking mythology, about Thor, Loki, Odin and Freya and many more of the gods and goddesses of the Viking world.

We researched and recorded where the Vikings came from and where they settled and what trades and ideas they brought with them.  We also modelled the Viking process of crafting, travelling and trading and stuck in both what we made and the gold coins (actually they were paper!) that we traded them for, and had great fun doing so.

We also learned about Viking armour and built our own Viking battle helmets from papier mache.  We painted them and decorated them in a similar style to the Sutton Hoo helmet that we researched.  All in all an exciting start to the year!
