Science

At West Minster, we aim to enable children to develop an understanding of the world in which they live, by using and applying scientific knowledge, skills and ideas as well as developing a lifelong curiosity and interest in the sciences. We want children to develop their scientific minds to ask questions and investigate the world around them.

We teach the science curriculum using the ‘Primary Science Scheme’ that engages our children in making science creative, fun and educational, helping develop a curiosity and love of science from a young age.

Through our implementation, our children are being equipped with enquiring minds, investigation skills and practical experiences. They are forever learning new vocabulary, recording and interpreting their findings and talking about how science affects their lives now and in the future.

Each year we take part in ‘British Science Week’ where the children follow the theme throughout the whole week engaging in science activities. We often have visitors in school, competitions and relish spending time with ‘Parents in school’.

Extra-Curricular

We want the children to enjoy and have a passion for practical investigation and learning and we are encouraging this through different avenues, one of them being our weekly science club.

Much of our extra-curricular learning follows the CREST Awards Scheme “helps young people to become independent and reflective learners through enquiry-based project work” (CREST)

Our club is run for 1 hour each week for a minimum of 6 weeks. After this time the children achieve a badge and certificate for their hard work. We are lucky enough to have year 6 Science Ambassadors, who share their love and enthusiasm for science, to join us each week and help the younger children become inquisitive with their learning.

We have been fortunate enough to have visits from people in the STEM industries to talk to the children and run workshops.
